Overview
The Waiting Statue, unveiled in May 2018, is a bold 17-foot-tall bronze sculpture located in Campus Martius Park, downtown Detroit. Created by contemporary artist KAWS (Brian Donnelly), the statue features two cartoon-like figures—an adult and child—known as “Companion,” a recurring character in KAWS’ work.

Artistic Significance
With X-ed out eyes, skull-and-crossbones heads, and Mickey Mouse-inspired bodies, the piece evokes themes of protection, vulnerability, and modern identity. Though controversial in style, it has become a popular photo spot and symbol of Detroit’s evolving art scene.
Commission and Placement
Commissioned by Dan Gilbert, founder of Quicken Loans, the statue was placed in front of the One Campus Martius building to be publicly accessible. It reflects Detroit’s commitment to revitalization through art and culture.
