Located on the western tip of Belle Isle Park, the James Scott Memorial Fountain is one of Detroit’s most iconic landmarks. Completed in 1925 and designed by renowned architect Cass Gilbert and sculptor Herbert Adams, this grand marble fountain features 510 feet of sculpted basins, with water jets reaching up to 125 feet high.

Funded by a controversial bequest from Detroit millionaire James Scott, the fountain includes a life-sized statue of Scott himself—added only after heated public debate. Today, it stands as a testament to early 20th-century artistry and civic legacy.

Visiting the Fountain
Surrounded by lush greenery and scenic river views, the fountain is a favorite spot for photography, relaxation, and summer strolls. It also serves as the podium backdrop for the Detroit Grand Prix and has appeared in classic films like Scarecrow starring Al Pacino.

While the fountain is not interactive, visitors can enjoy its beauty year-round and explore nearby Belle Isle attractions including the Belle Isle Aquarium and Belle Isle Conservatory.
